Nestled within the woodlands of the Oak Ridges Moraine, the University of Toronto’s Koffler Scientific Reserve (KSR), designed by Montgomery Sisam Architects, reimagines the research facility as a sustainable, adaptable environment that is deeply connected to its surrounding landscape.
“The studio has taken the idea of [a barn] apart: split, rotated and reassembled into a form that reads agrarian while simultaneously becoming a diagram of the science happening inside it,” describes author Hayley Daen.
The result is a small campus: a purpose-built mass timber structure and seasonal cabins that support research, teaching, and daily life – shaped by the work of KSR’s scientists and the local ecology.
