In Abbotsford, B.C., Semá:th (Sumas First Nation) and Arcadis are setting a new precedent for environmental rehabilitation and Indigenous self-governance, pioneering a first-of-its-kind “Soil Deposit, Removal, and Transport Law” to address the lasting ecological impacts of the draining of Sumas Lake and the 2021 flooding of Sumas Prairie – protecting Nation lands from exploitation and contamination while creating a framework that supports local economic growth and ecological restoration.
“We didn’t always have this capacity. But we weren’t lacking ability – just opportunity. So, with support from Arcadis, we cultivated our own,” said Jennette Pierre, Lands Manager for Sumas First Nation.
