As Canada continues to grapple with the housing crisis, DIALOG Chair Antonio Gómez-Palacio argues that affordability extends beyond the price of a home. In his latest piece for the National Observer, Gómez-Palacio examines how mixed-use, walkable communities like the University of Calgary’s University District can lower the overall cost of living by prioritizing mobility, energy efficiency, and access to essential services.

“Heavy investment in public parks and free amenities in the University District reduces household expenses on recreation and supports healthier lifestyles. In a walkable environment, people can play basketball or soccer down the street instead of getting in the car and spending money on a gym membership,” says Gómez-Palacio.
