Daily Commercial News sat down with Arcadis’ Eric Czerniak last week to talk about Hamilton’s newly opened Birch Transit Centre and the future of public transit.
The $390.4-million facility, designed by Arcadis, is Ontario’s first indoor facility built to fuel buses with indoor compressed natural gas (CNG) fuelling lanes – a cleaner alternative to diesel. The facility supports the expansion of HSR’s capacity by up to 300 more buses and is ready to accommodate hydrogen and battery-electric buses as the network evolves.
“It was like trying to put a jigsaw puzzle together,” Czerniak, principal and market sector lead, operations and maintenance facilities, said of designing the facility.
