Prediction markets are growing in popularity in Canada and securities regulators are grappling with a tricky question: are these platforms legitimate investment tools, or just a new form of gambling in disguise?
Gregory Hogan, partner in the Capital Markets Group at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, spoke with Wealth Professional Canada Magazine about the issue, urging caution while regulators work out exactly where that line falls.
“Some of these are going to be derivatives and there will be regulation around these. And some of them… may just be pure betting. And that’s, I think the question that they are grappling with is where do [securities regulators] draw the line,” says Hogan.
